Breathalyzer to Detect Lung Cancer

September 10th, 2009 LabTestGuy No comments

It is really amazing what advances we are making in science.  I read the other day that some scientists came up with a device used for early detection of lung cancer.  It seems that individuals with lung cancer excrete certain molecules in their breath that healthy individuals do not.  Detect these molecules and you got lung cancer.

Early Detection of Lung Cancer Early Detection of Lung Cancer

I feel this deserves more attention than the news organizations are giving.  This is HUGE.  Early detection is the key to survival during a battle with lung cancer.  Chances are, each person reading this has known someone who has died from lung cancer.  It seems that molecule detection is too easy to get notoriety.  I wonder if the early detection of lung cancer involved stem cells in some way would it would get more media attention.

I would like to note that scientists have isolated these identifying molecules with many forms of cancer.  They have also linked the presence of cancer to mutations of a particular piece of our DNA.  These molecules and bits of DNA are referred to as tumor markers.  Although it can be pricy ($699-$899) you can visit your local “Any Lab Test Now®” and get an entire tumor marker panel.

The female version includes a breast tumor screen.  This test looks for a snippet of DNA that has been linked to breast cancer.  Having this marker does not mean you have breast cancer.  All it means is that having this snippet of DNA puts you in the high risk category.  This can be analogous to fair skinned people having an increased risk of skin cancer.

You may ask yourself why get a test that isn’t definitive.  The reason is early detection of cancer.  If you have fair skin you will probably make more frequent visits to a dermatologist.  This is similar.  Knowing your DNA gives you an increased chance of getting breast cancer would encourage you to get checked more frequently and thereby creating the opportunity for early detection of breast cancer.

One of the tumor markers for men is our PSA.  There having many medical studies that suggest a high value on a PSA test greatly increases your chance of prostate cancer.  It only costs $49 if taken by itself at an Any Lab Test Now® location and monitoring your PSA can save your life.

The fact that this early detection breathalyzer isn’t getting as much media follows in line with most individuals thought process.  People tend to stick their head in the sand and think it won’t happen to them.  Their lives are a constant rollercoaster and they are concerned more about their current hill and would rather handle the big loop coming up when they have no other choice.  Sadly, this mentality is a death sentence with cancer.

If you have a family history of cancer or illness it is your responsibility to monitor your health.  You owe it to your family and friends.

Infertility & Testing

September 2nd, 2009 LabTestGuy 1 comment

Infertility tests are done to help find out why a woman cannot become pregnant. The tests help find whether the problem is with the man, the woman, or both. Tests usually include semen analysis and blood tests.

Fertility / Infertility

Fertility / Infertility

The tests that are done look for many different reasons that could be causing the fertility problems. One of the very first things that your doctor is going to want to check is tests for sexually transmitted diseases and infections. Many STD’s will cause fertility problems and increase risk of a miscarriage. Standard STD testing will test for Herpes, Syphillis, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Hepatitis and HIV.

You will also need to check hormone levels. Tests for Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Progesterone may be done during a woman’s menstrual cycle to help see whether she is ovulating. LH may be checked in a man to see whether he has a pituitary problem that may be the cause. Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland. It may be reveal if a woman has menstrual or ovulation problems.

The thyroid can prevent ovulation if it is not working properly, so you will need to test either a full Thyroid Panel or the Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH). If you have a history of thyroid problems or are taking medication for your thyroid, then you should do the full Thyroid Panel instead of just a TSH.

In some cases, a Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) test will be used to check a woman’s egg supply (ovarian reserve). FSH testing can also be used in men with a very low number of sperm to try to find out the source of the problem. A Testosterone test may be used to see whether a problem with the testicles or pituitary gland is preventing a man from being able to father a child. A low amount of testosterone can lead to low sperm counts.

Antibody blood tests may be done to find antisperm antibodies in blood, semen or vaginal fluids. Karyotyping is a blood test that looks for problems in the genetic material (chromosomes) in your cells. Some genetic problems make it hard to become pregnant or cause miscarriages.

Both partners will need to have all of these test done. You will want to have them done before any treatment is started.

The male partner will also need a Semen Analysis. A Semen Analysis checks the number of sperm (sperm count), the number of sperm that look normal, the number of sperm that can move normally, the number of white blood cells in the semen, and how much semen is made.

Infertility test can cost a lot and cause stress. You and your partner need to keep track of the frequency of sexual intercourse. While you are trying to get pregnant, make sure to follow the simple steps. You need to avoid certain medications, the use of caffeine, tobacco, alcohol, and illegal drugs. Tracking the menstrual cycle and exercise patterns can also help.

Infertility tests may find what is causing the problem and can help with treatment options. Sometimes the tests cannot find the cause of infertility and not all infertility problems can be treated. Infertility in men is often less successfully treated than infertility in women. You may still be able to become pregnant using assisted reproductive technology, which can treat male or female problems.

Anonymous Lab Testing Dallas

August 28th, 2009 LabTestGuy No comments

There are many reasons someone would want anonymous lab testing in Dallas, TX.  Being a politically red state many conservatives do not want to divulge their medical records to anyone, regardless whether it is their doctor, insurance company or beloved government.

Anonymous Lab Testing Dallas

Anonymous Lab Testing Dallas

When signing up of insurance you will probably have to go through a barrage of medical lab tests.  The insurance company wants to analyze you and then categorize you.  They are a business and businesses make money, not lose money.  If your medical lab tests indicate you may eventually have health problems which will in turn cost them money then they will establish your premium at a much higher rate than the average individual.  It is even possible that they analyze your results and decide it would not be worth having your business.  This is where the need for anonymous lab testing in Dallas comes in.

It is easily possible to take a person with high cholesterol and blood pressure and get their numbers into a healthy range within a month or two.  However, if you do not establish you baseline anonymously, than your insurance company will have access to those medical lab test results.  Imagine a more favorable scenario.  You go take your anonymous lab tests to establish a baseline.  If your results are favorable then you should immediately get lab tests for your insurance company.  If they are not favorable, take the next couple months eating fish and vegetables and walking daily.  You may need more anonymous lab tests.

This process may seem expensive, but you are actually saving thousands if not more in the long run.  Once you get blacklisted by an insurance company you will never get off.  You could lose 600 lbs and become a nutritional guru and they wouldn’t care.  If they do decide to cover you then you will be paying exorbitant premiums every month.

The links in the top right of my blog will take you to Any Lab Test Now® websites.  They are a direct-access lab testing company.  This means they provide a doctor’s order for any tests you in order to monitor you own health.  Walk-ins are welcome and there is no office visit fee.  Since they do not work with the insurance companies you can take an anonymous test.  Furthermore, they will allow you to give an alias such as Donald Duck thereby ensuring anonymity.  I highly recommend that if you are looking for truly anonymous lab testing in Dallas you should chose Any Lab Test Now®.

Small Businesses and Drug Testing

August 27th, 2009 LabTestGuy No comments

As a small business owner I am constantly re-evaluating my overhead.  It seems everyone is out to screw you.  My home phone and electricity bill has never been off, wrong or had weird charges; however, I find an error on my businesses bills at least once every other month.  The vendor is more than happy to remove the fraudulent charge, but that isn’t the point.

Employer Drug Testing

One way I have found to lower insurance costs is to institute an employee drug testing policy.  At first, I though it would be a pain in the ass and the savings wouldn’t be worth the effort to get it done.  I tried to do some research by calling the insurance companies and seeing what was required and such.  They made something so simple sound so complicated.  Apart from a mandatory new employee drug screen, there had to be a written random drug policy in place.  I was not allowed to construct the randomness of the drug screen.  The drug testing company had to in order to make it non-bias.

At this point I thought I would start calling employer drug screening companies and get pricing and details.  An internet search led me to believe the cost of an employer drug test starts around $50.  I called about 10 different North Dallas employer drug testing companies and got pricing approximately $30-$40 per drug screen for my 75 employees.  This cost included only the test and not on-site collection.  The onsite collection cost an additional $50 per instance.

These prices were barely in my budget so I thought I would get one more quote.  I was taking a piss at the RaceTrac gas station on the corner of I-35 and highway 380 in North Dallas and saw a business card for Any Lab Test Now in Plano.  They quoted me $30 per employee drug screen and no on-site collection fee.  Being a cheap ass I asked for better pricing.  They came down $3 more per test and we had a deal.  Although they are a national company, they are franchises.  This particular franchisee was starting up his onsite drug testing service and was willing to bend over backwards to get my business.

My employer drug testing program is up and running smoothly.  Random drug screens are performed 6 per month and I send all my new employees to one of their locations to get tested.  I even squeezed them into only billing me quarterly.  I like to hold on to my money as long as I can.  I would recommend Any Lab Test Now® North Dallas to anyone looking for implementing an employer drug testing program.

Why is “free healthcare” so bad?

August 25th, 2009 LabTestGuy No comments
National Healthcare

National Healthcare

Many Americans think President Obama’s free healthcare is a good idea and do not see what all the fuss is about.  Lately, democrat politicians claim the tea party meetings are republican organized and do not actually represent a viable percentage of their constituents.  California has had a similar free healthcare system in place now and statistics used in this blog are taken from the LA Times.

40% of the 10.2 million workers in LA County are paid under the table in cash and never report this income to the government to be taxed.  It is speculated that majority of these payments are made because at least one party is an illegal alien.  I believe it is safe to say that those that are not illegal do not want to report their income due to the high taxes they would have to pay.

Here are some numbers that show how not enforcing immigration laws is weighing down on society while costing Americans millions in taxes, food, housing and healthcare.  95% of warrants for murder in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens.  3. 75% of people on the most wanted list in Los Angeles are illegal aliens.  Nearly 35% of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican nationals here illegally, and 29% of inmates in federal prisons are illegal aliens.  The FBI reports half of all gang members in Los Angeles are most likely illegal aliens from south of the border.

The numbers are staggering.  Taxpayers can not handle the current government programs and entitlements not counting a new healthcare system.  We are currently feeling the birth pains of how big government spending will affect all parts of the US.  Dallas, Texas is not as far along as the rest of the nation, but we are all in this together.  Similar to Robin Hood, once more liberal states have taxed their citizens into economic poverty they will take from states they are in better situations than themselves to pay for their programs.  I read a month or two ago that Governor Rick Perry uttered that he would rather succeed from the Union if nationalized healthcare is passed.

Over 2/3 of all births in Los Angeles County are to illegal alien Mexicans on Medi-Cal , whose births were paid for by taxpayers.  My wife and I are about to have a baby, not covered by our HSA, and the doctor’s fee is $2,600 the lab fees/sonograms total $1200, and the hospital stay is estimated $8,500.  How in the world do they justify taxpayers paying for someone else’s baby?  I realize the reason our bill is so high is because we must pay for another patient that won’t pay.  When you break it all down, hospitals are businesses and businesses make money.  If they don’t make money, they go out of business.

Here are some cake-topper statistics to show that illegals will be covered by a healthcare system they do not contribute to.  Over 300,000 illegal aliens in Los Angeles County are living in garages, and nearly 60% of all occupants of HUD properties are illegal.

What is happening currently in the US is we are creating a slave class.  I think it is horrible.  These individuals must live in poverty and stay under the radar of society in order to stay in the US.  I know several illegals.  One man is beat about once a week by his alcoholic employer.  He can’t report the crime for fear of deportation and he is told that if he quits his employer will have him deported.  This is slavery plain and clear.  Illegals are paid under the table and have found it necessary to their survival to abuse loopholes in the system.  You may argue that all Americans were once immigrants, but the difference is we came here legally.  If all the estimated 12 million illegals in the US were granted amnesty you would see why the US can not handle this many immigrants all at once.  Our system of capitalism thrives in situations of population growth, but this is an extreme exception.  Our economy can not sustain this growth, let alone implementing a new healthcare system.

AnyLabTestNow (Plano) saved my life…literally!

August 18th, 2009 LabTestGuy No comments

In December of 2008 my youngest son and his wife purchased the franchise for AnyLabTestNow . Being the good parents my husband and I are, we drove from Wichita Falls to their Plano location.  We purchased one of the packages which happened to include an Iron Binding Capacity and Ferritin.  I only was interested in my cholesterol levels, and I was shocked when upon receiving my results a few days later, my Total Iron Binding Capacity and Ferritin levels were through the roof!

Medical Lab Testing

Medical Lab Testing

The Quest Diagnostics ( a lab used by most physicians, clinics and hospitals) report was easy to read and understand because beside the test result numbers was a column that gave me the norms for every test.  After searching the Internet I found that more than likely I had a genetic blood disease called hemochromatosis.  Of course, I made an appointment right away with my doctor who said I needed a Hereditary Hemochromatosis DNA Mutation Analysis before treatment could begin.

AnyLabTestNow drew more blood and a week later I had positive confirmation that I did, indeed, have this little known Iron Overload Disease!  More research on the Internet revealed that most people are only found to have this condition upon autopsy!  My physician said that I was “very fortunate to have found this out now!”  The extra iron my body was producing was being dumped in my heart, kidneys, lungs, and liver!  Iron overloading the liver is one of the causes of some liver cancers

Weekly phlebotomies ordered by my doctor will eventually reduce my iron levels to a normal rate and my organs will begin to dump any excess iron at the same time so I can avoid the obvious dire consequences of this disease.  So, AnyLabTestNow, and my son, saved my life…….literally!
